|
| | 1919 - 2008 | Josephine Estelle Knicely, 88, of Ojai, passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, at Community Memorial Hospital. Jo was born on June 6, 1919. One of six children, she was born on the Lann family farm in a Swedish settlement near Axtell, Kan. She graduated from Kansas State University in 1941. After one year of teaching in Wathena, Kan., she decided to join the war effort and moved to Los Angeles. There she was hired, trained and worked the rest of the war as an airway traffic controller. While working at the OaklandAirport, she was introduced to the handsome commander of LST625, named Clarke A. Knicely. The attraction was mutual and they were married on April 28, 1946, in Los Angeles. Clarke became an attorney after graduating from Loyola Marymount Law School. They lived in Los Angeles for several years before settling in Ojai in 1960 with their children, Carol, Allen and Mary. Jo enjoyed a long teaching career as a junior high school home economics teacher, a preschool teacher and director, a second-grade teacher and finally retired a Miller Unrue Special reading teacher in 1979. During this time she attained her master's degree in education from the University of Southern California in 1975. After retirement she focused on her love of traveling, cooking, reading and political debate. Jo will be remembered by those who knew her for her enthusiastic love for life, for her many interests — intellectual, artistic, political — and especially for her interest and support of all whom she loved both near and far. She is survived by her children, Carol Knicely Guilbaut, Allen Knicely, and Mary Rausch; grandchildren, Jeremy and Flora Guilbaut, Gillian Knicely, Alexis, Hayden, Austin and Shea Rausch; sister, Marie Hodgkinson; brother, George Lann; and many beloved extended family members. Teach me, O Lord, not to hold on to life too tightly. Teach me to hold it lightly; not carelessly, but lightly, easily. Teach me to take it as a gift, to enjoy and to cherish while I have it, and to let go gracefully and thankfully when the time comes. The gift is great, but the Giver is greater still. Thou, O God, art the Giver and in thee is a Life that never dies. Amen.

26 Sep 2009 – from Kaye
I don't know your family, just reading the memorials online.
I know that you must still miss Mrs Knicely a great deal. Just be encouraged that the Bible tells us that the dead will live again and that the righteous themselves will possess the earth. Isaiah 26:19 and Psalm 37:29.
Sincerely,

10 Mar 2009 – from Shannon Rochester-Henry
My Family just learned of the passing of Mrs Knicely. I had the pleasure of knowing her thru the US LST 625. My Grandfather Jack Rochester Sr. was on the LST 625. I spent some time with her during the LST Reunions as I always joined my Grandfather. She was a spunky lady and we all adored her. Our last LST 625 Reunion was in Charleston, SC and she attended with her Son. We had a lovely time. She will be missed by all the LST 625.
We send you all our condolences and our thoughts and pray...

7 Mar 2008 – from Austin Rausch
The Ballad of Joseyphine
On a hot and sultry Kansas night
two parents reveled in the scene
of their happy newborn baby girl
They named her Josephine.
A joyous sight in rocky times
when they had many mouths to feed
They would gladly sacrifice their meal
so that the little girl could eat.
She grew up smart and grew up fast
until she felt the urge to leave
to seek out sunny California
where a young navy man she'd meet.
That man saw something special
as he gazed i...

29 Feb 2008 – from Nancy Teague
Dear Carol, Allen, and Mary,
I was so sad to learn of Aunt Jo's death. It was such a suprise as I had just thought of her a day or two before she died! Upon learning of her death one of my initial thoughts was of her newsy Christmas letter that I will now miss. (Which Mary, by the way, when I read this year's letter I thought what a special time that Mary could travel with her mom like that.) Aunt Jo had a way of writing those that made one want to read the whole thing! I always learned somet...

28 Feb 2008 – from Marilyn Roderick Knicely
For the eulogy, some adjectives that come to mind when I think of your
Mom:
elegant, vivacious, daring, adventuresome, strong-willed, curious,
memory-like-a-vice, courageous, "commanding" in a big way despite her
small size, sincere, an individualist in everything she did!
interests: cooking her entire life, always interested in trying new
recipes and sharing her's
life-long penchant for travel AND for Learning-taking college art classes
with Clarke in their septuagenarian year...

27 Feb 2008 – from Gillian Knicely
I'm devastated at the loss of Farmor, but I think we all need to be strong for her and remember her as the woman that she was: strong-willed, kind-hearted, intelligent, and funny! She was a wonderful person who brought love into everyone's heart. I love her so much, and I take solace in knowing that she is in a better place. Let us not mourn a death, but celebrate a life. My love goes out to every single one of my family members, whether related by blood or love, we will all remember my wonderfu...
