ARLIS DURELL HEAD
Arlis Durell Head died on January 6, 2010 at his home in Palm Coast, Florida. He was born in Banner, Mississippi on May 1, 1936. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 51 years, Patricia Vickers Head and his four children: Donna Head, Janet Perry, David Head and Elizabeth Henry; one daughter-in-law, Cathy Head; and three sons-in-law, Greg Lynn, Allen Perry, and Kevin Henry. In addition, he is survived by his seven beloved grandchildren: Jordan Perry, Jacob Perry, Taylor Head, Sarah Head, Megan Head, Emma Henry and Jack Henry. They will miss their Papa, who always told wonderful stories, made them laugh, instilled in them the value of education, faith and family.
Durell was the youngest of 13 children – his siblings were Nina, Aubrey, Idell, Fannie Lou, Alice Ruth, Raymond, Roy, Clara, Maxine, George Dewey, Robert, and Jack. He was the devoted uncle to 31 nieces and nephews.
Durell met Patricia in Lanett, Alabama on a blind date while Durell was serving in the military at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Durell worked with IBM for 32 years, and Patricia supported him throughout. He later finished his bachelor’s degree at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta and later his MBA at Mercer University in Atlanta. He later worked as Associate Dean of Continuing Education for Oglethorpe University.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father to his children and grandchildren, devoted member of the Head clan and instrumental in the founding of the Head family reunion which has occurred each year for the last 30 years. He was a great listener and always had an opinion to offer (even if we didn’t ask for it!). He loved his garden and left this earth tending to it. He was a natural leader who wanted the best for all of us and was a true friend to all who came in contact with him.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or French Camp Academy in his name.
May God bless the memory of Durell and all who have known and loved him. |

Worked under Al in the late 1980's when he was teaching multimedia for Waymon Story. I will have to catch on things when I see him again. He taught me this: Treat a person "as he is", and he will only remain the same. Treat him "as he should be" and you will inspire him to become something better.
